Pecan Pie Bars

Hello Everyone!

As promised, I am going to give you the recipe for Pecan Pie Bars.  These are so yummy!  I know this because I don't like pecans.  I don't hate them but I don't like them.  I don't like pecan pie, pecans in banana bread, cookies, on top of ice cream, nothing.  But, I do love these Pecan Pie Bars.  Why?  You ask.  I really don't know.  You'll just have to try these and see if you can figure it out. I think it probably has to do with the toffee bits.  Here is the recipe and pics of the process.

2 CUPS FLOUR
½ CUP POWDERED SUGAR
1 CUP BUTTER

COMBINE FLOUR AND SUGAR.  CUT IN BUTTER UNTIL ALL ARE IN FINE PARTICLES
PRESS INTO 9 X 13 PAN
BAKE AT 350 FOR 15 MINS

1 14oz CAN EAGLE BRAND SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK
1 EGG
1 TEASPOON VANILLA
1 CUP PECANS COARSLY CHOPPED
1 PKG. BRICKLE CHIPS (BITS O’ BRICKLE)

BEAT EAGLE BRAND MILK, EGG & VANILLA.  STIR IN BRICKLE CHIPS AND PECANS.

SPREAD OVER CRUST
BAKE FOR AN ADDITIONAL 25 MINS OR UNTIL GOLDEN
COOL
CHILL AND CUT INTO BARS
STORE IN REFRIDGERATOR

Even though there is a lot of butter in the crust, I still spray my dish before putting the crust in to bake.  It makes it easier to get out where the topping gets on the side of the dish.  Boy, these are good.  It just makes me want to go and makes some.  But then that would make me want to eat some all of them.  Not a good thing.  I'm scared to know how many calories on in these things.  That's not to discourage you from giving them a try though.  Maybe you have more willpower than I do.  So give em a try, let me know what you think and let me know if you do or don't have the willpower when it comes to these bars!  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,

maggie jane

Help! What is this?

Hello Everyone!

I need help identifying something I picked up at Salvation Army the other day.  It really is the neatest thing but I don't have any idea what the craft is called.  I was thinking of trying to sell it as it doesn't go in my son's room but am not sure how to advertise what I have.
It looks to me like it is kind of old.  I'm hoping some of you out there that deal in antiques and different types of needlework might be able to help me.  Please let me know what you all think.  Thanks!  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,

More Baby Signs

Hello Everyone!

I have been busy, busy this week trying to get ready for JBF.  I wanted to make more things to put in the sale this time.  I've made hairbows, flower hair clips, decorated bags and more baby signs.  I first showed you this here when I did a last minute add on to a baby gift.  I've made more and changed one of my sayings.  These I am hoping to sell at the JBF sale next week.  If not, I'll put them in my inventory for the soon to open Etsy shop.

This is the newly added phrase.
These signs are so fun and easy to make.  They will add just that special little touch to any baby room.  I hope they sell so I can make more! :)  I better sign off of here so I can go print my tags for JBF and start pinning and taping them on. (That's the no fun part.)  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,

Impromtu Company and a Garden

Hello Everyone!

A funny thing happened the other day.  I called my sister-in-law to see if she was going to town.  I was making her daughter a pair of culottes and wanted to try them on before making any more.  I was doing this for her birthday and was using a new pattern so I needed to see if they would work.  When I called, her husband said that she wasn't but wondered if they could come over and till up a spot for my garden.  What was a girl to say?  Of course you can!!!
A little background is needed here.  We have had a small garden in years past.  Last year, we never got one in because we don't own a rototiller, didn't have the money to rent one, and just didn't have the time to mess with it.  We were working inside last summer on my daughters room , my son's bathroom, and other various indoor projects.  We had talked to my brother-in-law about wanting a garden this year.  (He's a big garden person.)  Anyway, he offered to come over sometime to till up the ground for us.  Our previous garden had grown over with grass.  So we just figured sometime we would set up a time to get that done.  You can imagine my delight and surprise when he just suggested to come on over that day when I called.
We also did an even smaller one to the right of this one (closer to rock fence) to plant squash.  We would like to keep the squash bugs as far away from the other produce as possible.  Gotta hate those things!!!

Since it was evening, I asked them to just come and stay for dinner.  I was already planning on making chili and cornbread for dinner.  They have 7 in their family so I just doubled up and my SIL brought a salad and we were well fed.
Sorry, no picture of the chili.  My daughter took it and it was pretty blurry.  I also made Pecan Pie Bars for dessert.  Those have to go in their own post with recipe included.  So yummy!!!

The next day, I got another call from my BIL who said, "Have I got a deal for you!"   He said he had just finished planting his potatoes and had extra and would I like to have them.  Once again, what's a girl to say?  Yes, I want them!  I was going to have to go to town and buy seed potatoes but didn't really want to have to go that day.  I teased him and told him that I thought the deal would include him planting them for me.  No such luck! So the next day I planted them myself.
This is the first time I have planted potatoes so we'll see how it goes.  I am going to dig up some of them really young and some we will let mature.  The middle of April is when I will plant my cucumbers, okra, peppers, squash and whatever else I decide to try.  So maybe this summer I will have some fun things to show you with our garden produce.  So until next...

Have a blessed day,

Is it Spring or Not?!?

Hello Everyone!

I really had begun to think spring was here.  I was enjoying the warmer weather, the chance to wear flip flops again, to lower our electric bill (less heater usage) and just a chance to get outside.  So what happened?  It snowed again!!!

These pics are of the day after.  Since it had been warm, the snow didn't last long.  It was long enough for me to say "Brrr" and go light a fire and crank up the heat.  Not to mention discarding my flip flops for knee hi socks and shoes.  But since it is technically spring and this was on Monday; now on Tuesday, it is all gone. We are supposed to be up into the sixties by the end of the week.  Yay!  Now I'm going to show you a little of what we did accomplish when the weather teased us with it's warmth.
See all this ugliness.  We had an old barn foundation in this spot when we bought the property 13 years ago.  We removed most of the foundation but there was still a pile of rocks, scrap metal and dirt that had been piled up beside the old barn.  We've been wanting it gone for a long time but other things just made it to the top of the priority list instead.  We finally decided to do something about it.  I'm going to show you a few more of the ugliness and then the work being done to correct it all.
Don't know if you can spot the yellow in the above picture but there was a "diamond in the rough" on all that rock and dirt.  There is a little yellow daffodil that came up.
Sorry for poor picture quality.  The surrounding area focused great but the flower didn't. :(
A backhoe and a dump truck can work miracles.
Now I said I wanted to show you how it looked after they did their thing but then I realized that I didn't take any after pictures.  To tell the truth, it still looks ugly.  That is because we still need to bring in some topsoil and plant grass seed.  I did buy the grass seed at Sam's but am still waiting for the topsoil to be spread nice and level before I spread the seed.  I will have to do an update later.  We had to stop because of the above mentioned cold, snowy, wet weather we were having. :(   Hopefully, it will get worked on again soon.
Now you know how it is when a tractor type vehicle comes to work and you have a son.  Well, school went out the window for a little bit because my son (and my daughter) wanted to watch the men work.
Son chose the hammock.
Daughter curled up in her daddy's jacket on the porch.
So that is some of what's been going on outside.  I have more but I think it will have to go in another post as this is getting lengthy.  So, what has been happening outdoors in your neck of the woods?  Let me know what projects you have going to usher in the spring.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,

Daughter's New Room Part 1

Hello Everyone!

Once again, I'm going to show a project from last year with a few additions.  We did a lot of moving around last year.  My sewing room became my daughter's room, my daughter's room became my son's room and my son's room became my sewing room.  Why?  You ask for all the moving around.  Well, it goes like this.  My sewing room was upstairs and had some water damage to the ceiling.  It was a peaked ceiling and there was no attic and therefore no ventilation.  Condensation formed in the hot, humid summers and caused us to have water/mold damage to the insulation and sheetrock.  We knew we needed to do something but kept putting it off.  Last year we decided not to put it off anymore.  We were trying to think of ways to save money.  We also didn't want the mess of sheetrock and everything that goes along with it.  This room also had no windows because it was an exterior room when we added onto our house.  (there really is a lot here to explain but I'll try and give you a good enough explanation without too many words)  So, we wanted to add a dormer as well as drop our ceiling (for ventilation).  We knew it would be expensive so that is why we went to brainstorming ways to make it cheaper.  We planned on doing the work ourselves so it wasn't a matter of labor costs as much as a matter of materials cost.  That is when we came up with the idea of finding some old barns and tearing them down for lumber.  We didn't want to pay for the wood so it took a little time to find some generous farmer who had a barn he would allow us to strip down.  Once found, my husband went to work.  For a time, we had piles of old wood on our front porch.  It was some really great wood though.  I'm going to show a few of the pics of the raw "bones" of the room and building the dormer.

Sorry I don't have any pics of the room when it was my sewing room.  I didn't think about doing pics until we had started tearing into it all.
Fortunately, we had our nephews over (one is in construction) to help both my hubby and my son get the dormer framed in.  Unfortunately, it decided to rain and hail the day they chose to cut the hole in my roof!
That is father & son hard at work.  We nailed up the barn wood onto the rafters and then nailed up lathe strips to cover the seams.
I was loving this little nailer.  It went so fast and was light weight.
It was so easy to use that even my daughter got to nail a few strips. (I'm not sure what the towel around the head and the head light was all about.  Guess she needed something to stick her pencil into.)
My son was a big help cutting the strips to length.
After all the wood was up, we caulked the gaps and painted it all white.  Then, the end wall I painted a mustard yellow.  I wasn't too sure about the color when I started.
Was this really the color I was looking for?  My husband thought I'd gotten a good deal on some French's Mustard and was using that.  (What a funny guy.) I have to be really careful when picking colors because once I buy it, I'm stuck with it.  My hubby isn't one for wasting money on paint.  I picked it so I had to use it.  As we went along, the paint color grew on me.
See, it doesn't look too bad.  After the painting was done, it came time for the floor.  Fortunately, one of our nephews has a cabinet business.  We were able to use his planer to get the weathered look off the wood and get smooth boards for the floor.  It turned out beautiful.
Here is a pic of the "raw" wood and then with a coat of polyurethane.  Check out the grain.  The poly really made it "pop".  We painted and trimmed out two built-in bookshelves.
One she uses for her books.
And one she uses for her "dresser".
This is the new dormer.  I love this window.  It gives an excellent view of our backyard from the upstairs.  It is the only upper window on this side of the house.

And this is a very satisfied little girl in her new room!  It is hard to see in this picture, but the yellow in the quilt is why I picked the yellow for the wall and doors.  As you can tell, the door to her room is a French door that leads to a hallway and the top of the stairs.  No privacy.  We put these in originally when we added on because of the fact that there were no windows.  We wanted some light to come in the room.  Now with the new window we don't really need the glass doors. They really look cute though, so we left them.  However, there was still the problem with privacy.  Whenever we had company, I had to find a sheet to hang over the door and window. (one of the French doors is just a window; doesn't open)  Well, no more.  I found some curtains and a rod on clearance at Walmart.
Now we can just pull them across to afford her or our company some privacy.  The other thing I have added are some new pillow cases.
I got the pattern from a blog called MADE.  She did her's with two different fabrics which are really cute but I have had a little bit of a hard time finding fabrics that coordinate with the quilt.  The colors are just a little bit different.  Anyway, instead of the interest of different fabrics, I just added this vintage trim that I picked up at a garage sale.  It was perfect.  It made them just that one step above the normal, plain, store bought pillowcases.  By the way, if you are looking for tutorials on a lot of different sewing projects, check out the MADE blog.  She has some really excellent tutorials.  Well, that is all for now.  I know this has been a long post.  I appreciate you all sticking with me.  It was a lot of work redoing this room but very rewarding.  The bath is just through the closet so it got redone at the same time.  Since this has been a long post and I have to sign off for now (ironing to do :(  ), I'll save that for another day.  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,

maggie jane

Growing Child - Cleaner Closet

Hello Everyone!

Well, what do you do when your child grows by leaps and bounds and there is a new season coming on?  You clean out a closet, right?  That's what I did recently.  My daughter is going to be 10 this summer and she is only about a foot shorter than me.  I have noticed lately that some of her clothes seem "ill-fitted" meaning too short or too tight.  So, with JBF coming on and summer coming on, I decided to put her through the torture process of trying on everything in her closet.  And boy did she have a lot of stuff!
I can tell you she had more than she needed as she didn't wear a lot of what she had.  We went through it all and I told her we were getting rid of anything that didn't fit or that she didn't like and wasn't going to wear.  She was pretty ok with that.  There were a few items that I had to convince her that she didn't need anymore.  There are some items in the closet that are too big and we are saving for later.  So we went through it all and now it looks more like this.

It still looks like a lot but believe me, we got rid of a lot of stuff.  We gave some to a friend that is a smaller size, some for JBF and some to Salvation Army.  Most of what is left is long sleeve.  Even that we will probably have to get rid of come fall/winter since she just refuses to stop growing!  If anybody has ever figured out how to keep your kids from growing up, let me know. ;)  I still haven't gone through her shoes.  Being as she now wears the same size shoe as I do and I sometimes see her in MY closet, I'm figuring a lot of these shoes on her shelf are now too small.  After all this closet purging, I discovered she needed a few skirts and several shirts for this summer.  We went to Goodwill and I scored 4 skirts, 2 shirts and 3 tank tops for her.  We got a few other things for myself and my son.  I was very pleased with our purchases as I usually only find a couple things if any when I shop our Goodwill.  That's not to say it isn't a very good Goodwill.  That's only to say that the person before me and all my friends find all the deals before I can get to them!  (We actually have a very nice Goodwill.)  My daughter, niece and I are planning a trip to visit a friend and go hit the thrift stores in her town.  Unfortunately, my daughter is in that "I'm still a little girl but have to where teenage or petite women's clothes."  Most of the styles are too "grown-up" for a 10 year old but then again, a lot of the children's clothes now a days are too grown-up for a 10 year old.  Have you noticed that?  I'm sorry but I don't want my 10 year old to look "sexy".  Anyway, I'll get off my soap box here and finish up.  This is some of what's been happening in our home as we await the full onslaught of spring and summer.  What have you been doing to get ready?  So until next time...

Have a blessed day,
